March 8, 2019 is acknowledged around the world as International Woman’s Day in recognition of the participation of half the world’s population. As a part of this celebration of women, HerFlow Foundation created its Unsung Shero Award to recognize women who are doing important work in their communities. The awards were handed out at the Foundation’s inaugural Celebrate Her Brunch held on Sunday, March 17, 2019 at the Jamaica Pegasus.
Shelly-Ann Weeks, Founder and Executive Director of HerFlow Foundation explains the genesis of the Celebrate Her Brunch “CELEBRATE Her Brunch is created to recognize, highlight and honor Jamaican women achieving important goals in business and her community. Each woman will be the recipient of the inaugural HerFlow Unsung Shero Award. The awardees will be chosen based on the WORK that she does and the impact that she makes.”
The awardees are:
Monique Lynch – Mental Health Advocate
Monique works with mental patients at Bellevue Hospital. She volunteers her time working with them, giving the much needed support.
Danielle Terrelonge – Social Advocate
Danielle is not aligned with any one cause, she works as she is led to do so.
Joseth Brown – Tamar’s Redemption
Provides a support group for women who suffered abuse.
Trisha-Ann McTaggart – I am Woman. Period.
Collect donations of personal care items for 3 girls homes.
Celia Steele – Operation Love
Feeds the homeless
Sara-Lou Morgan- Walker – The Angelic Ladies Society
Works with juvenile inmates at the South Camp Correctional Facility.
Sabrina Webster – Social Advocate
Wine Down for Charity – Raise funds for various causes including Endometriosis and Lupus.
Lianne McNaughton – Youth Can Do IT
Engages young girls in the STEM fields focusing on IT.
Chelsea Wright – Girls Who Know
Raises awareness on Women Issues
Nadeen Spence – I’m Glad I’m A Girl Foundation
Advocate for and empower girl to grow up to be confident women
“We know that there are numerous women working hard to make their communities and by extension, Jamaica better and we want to create a platform where they can be recognized.” Weeks explained. “Service is hard work and we want to thank the women who are busy getting things done.”
