Period Awareness Day was established by Author, Activist and HerFlow Founder and Executive Director, Shelly-Ann Weeks to address the stigma and shame associated with menstruation.
Period Awareness Day provides an opportunity to start focused conversations about periods, provide support for those who are affected by the culture of shame and ensure that every Jamaican is support in their period management. Stigma and shame stop Jamaicans from seeking help and getting the support they need to have dignified periods.

Period Awareness Day 2022
Theme: Period is Everybody’s Business
We believe that periods affect everyone, not just those having the experience. Therefore everybody must get involved in ending the stigma and shame associated with menstruating.
Period Awareness Day – 2021
Theme: I bleed. Period.
The gig is up, the secret is out. Period is happening all day everyday and so is life. This year’s theme for #PeriodAwarenessDay focuses on normalizing conversations about periods by declaring that #IBleedPeriod.
Teachers, nurses, students, mothers, citizens all over the world are all doing their jobs, going about their days, and they bleed. Period is life and it flows throughout life while facilitating the creation of life.
How do you participate?
Create your own posts for social media demonstrating how you are living your life, while bleeding. Use the hash tag #IBleedPeriod and tag @herflow to your post.
Our major project for 2021 is to donate menstrual products to 28 clinics – 2 in each parish – across Jamaica. This is an effort to ensure that like condoms, FREE menstrual products are available to those who need them.
This project is facilitated by donations made to us by Massy Distributors (distributors of Stayfree feminine products), Fontana Pharmacy (drive done throughout the summer).
